Local 23 Spends The Day At Vanguard Career Center

Local 23 leaders welcomed students from the Vanguard Sentinel Career and Technology Center to spend the day at the Northern Ohio Regional Training Center. Forty students got to work on setting tile, laying brick and block, tuck pointing and restoring brick. These students are the future of our trade, and they’re learning from the best!

Thanks to the NORTC staff: Brick Instructor Josh Holland, P.C.C. Instructor Lou Feijoo, Tile Instructor Tom Sigley, and Field Representatives Matt Aberl and Scott Ansell. Their tireless work and leadership is what makes these collaborations possible. And a special thank you to Vanguard Instructor Mike Batdorf for letting us show his students our great union trade.

Northwest Ohio Chapter Hosts Steward Training

“It’s great to see our members taking initiative to become a more involved union member. Stewards provide members with a voice on the job and are there to stand up for members when needed. On Saturday, Local 23 got a lot stronger and we will continue to host these trainings to empower even more members,” said Local 23 President Danny Musacchio.

Union Solidarity

Did you catch last week’s Union Solidarity? We shared a great video that dives into how billionaires use the anti-worker State Policy Network to trick workers into thinking they are on our side. Billionaires do not care about the rights of working people, they only care about their profits. Watch the video to learn more about their misleading tactics to bust unions here.

Cleveland Builds Apprenticeship Outreach

Training Director Brian Greynolds recently participated in Cleveland Builds’ new 40-hour Apprenticeship Readiness Program, providing hands-on instruction and working directly with individuals exploring opportunities within the skilled trades. Representing BAC Local 23, Greynolds demonstrated masonry techniques and highlighted the union apprenticeship as a proven and reliable pathway to a long-term career.

The program allowed BAC Local 23 to maintain a visible presence within regional workforce development efforts while connecting directly with prospective apprentices.

“This was an important opportunity to show individuals that BAC Local 23 offers a structured pathway into a skilled and rewarding career,” said Greynolds. “By working directly with participants, we were able to demonstrate the value of our training and the opportunities available through our apprenticeship program.”

Participation in Cleveland Builds supports ongoing efforts to strengthen recruitment, expand training opportunities, and promote the long-term strength of the trade.

Union Solidarity

Recently, we’ve been getting a lot of questions from members like ‘what is Right to Work?’ and ‘what is prevailing wage?’. We’re happy to get these questions because it means members are engaged and want to learn more about their union and the threats we face. So, we decided to start a project called ‘Union Solidarity’. We’re going to be sending texts out to all members each week on Wednesday, with answers to these questions and much more. From what is a scab to what is the best union song of all time? (Hint: It’s by Woody Guthrie, although we’re open to other answers.)

This will be a great way for members to empower themselves by learning more about the history of the labor movement, past and present fights for labor rights, and how we can stand strong together even while many organizations are trying to bust up unions all across the country.

Be sure to check your cell on Wednesday for the first edition of ‘Union Solidarity’. Not signed up for the text list? Please reach out to the front office and they can make sure you get added to the list. You won’t want to miss these.

Hands-On With The Next Generation of Bricklayers!

Last week, Canton Field Rep. Drew Fernandez and Akron Field Rep. Tom Dieringer took a trip to the Portage Lakes Career Center and spoke with the junior class about Local 23 and a future career in bricklaying. They laid brick and block with them for a few hours, all while talking about the industry and the benefits of being union strong. Juniors and seniors from four area high schools (Green, Manchester, Springfield and Coventry) attend Portage Lakes Career Center and the Construction Class that they offer. Students learn all the trades, but have spent the last couple weeks learning how to lay brick and block.

Fernandez and Dieringer are not alone in their outreach to young bricklayers! Canton member, Jeremiah Unklesbay, has been going to the Career Center on his own time once a winter for years and working with the young people. He also does the same with Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia.

“It’s really rewarding to be able to spend time with these young students and teach them about the work we do and about our union. A huge shoutout to the class’s instructor, Adam Irwin, for letting us join in and work with the students and thank you to Jeremiah and Beaver Constructors for donating 144 new blocks and a bulk bag of mason sand to the class. This is how we build our trade and our union: together,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez will be joining Unklesbay in January at the Buckeye Career Center to teach even more young people about the union.
