Watch Your Mailboxes Starting This Week -Survey Coming

Be sure to watch your mailboxes in the coming week, as we are mailing an official survey to all members. We are also going to give you a chance to respond by emailing and texting the survey to you.

This survey will cover several important items, so please be sure to keep a close eye out.

  1. A New Logo: We will be giving you three options of logos to vote on and the winner will become the new Local 23 logo.
  2. Confirming Contact Info: We will be asking all members to confirm and update their contact information – email, cell, and address – so that we make sure when we send out important union information, you are receiving it.
  3. Feedback From Members: We want to hear from you about your top priorities and concerns for our union moving forward.
  4. Raffle Entry: All members who complete and submit the survey will automatically be entered into a raffle. First prize: 65” Flat Screen TV. Second Prize: Level. Third Prize: Trowel. To be entered into the raffle, the survey must be completed by no later than July 15 at 11:59 p.m.

We hope all members take a few minutes out of their day to complete this survey.

Scaffolding Collapses at Nonunion Cleveland Worksite

If you are not aware, there was an accident with a non-union contractor in the Cleveland area. The craft workers working for Southwest Companies were restoring the façade on a 125-year-old building. Their swing stage scaffolding collapsed leaving two workers hanging from a harness and one self-rescued on a window ledge. Cleveland Fire & EMS had to rescue the workers.

As union craft workers, our safety and training are paramount. It’s hard to know what, if any, safety training was provided to those nonunion employees.

We are going to continue to keep the public informed about the need to hire union craft workers to keep everyone safe.

Bricklayers Bringing The Heat

Check out the photo below and share it with pride.

This is bricklayer ingenuity at our best.

BAC Local 23 bricklayers were already involved in a difficult, intricate restoration project at Cleveland Thermal when subzero temperatures – we’re talking 15 degrees with a windchill of -3 – hit the Cleveland area.

Our members kept their cool and figured out a way to keep the workplace warm.

Thanks to Bill Jenkins, a long-time foreman running the job for Renaissance Restoration who happens to have a keen interest in steam heat, BAC Local 23 bricklayers built a box around the work site and pumped in warm air from Cleveland Thermal.

“No matter what is thrown at us, our bricklayers get it done,” said Danny Musacchio, Local BAC 23 president. “Bill Jenkins and the crew made sure the job kept running through one of the worst patches of subzero temperatures we have witnessed in a long time.”

BAC Local 23 Constitution Committee Meets

The BAC Local 23 Constitution Committee, composed of members from all 9 local chapters appointed by President Danny Musacchio by way of a vote of confidence at our November meetings, met on Friday, Jan. 17 in Columbus.

Over the course of more than four hours, the committee members listened to a legal presentation about the Constitution, discussed a range of issues regarding the subjects covered by the Constitution, and adopted procedures for moving forward.

The committee members agreed to convene again after the officer elections are completed in March.

Chapter Nominations Wrapping Up This Week

Chapter nominations for the 9 BAC Local Chapters are wrapping up this week.

Tonight (Monday, January 20), the Tri-State Chapter and Central Ohio Chapter will meet, and tomorrow night the North Shore Chapter, Northeast Ohio Chapter, Southern West Virginia and Northern West Virginia Chapters are scheduled to hold nomination meetings.

Three chapters previously met: the Ohio Valley Chapter on Thursday, January 16, the Southwest Ohio Chapter on January 9 and the Northwest Ohio Chapter on January 7. The candidates nominated at those meetings had no opposition so they are all duly elected.

The elected positions are for three years with the terms beginning April 1.

BAC Local 23 Secures Nearly $300,000 in Backpay and Interest for Bricklayers

Over the holidays, just in time for Christmas, BAC Local 23 secured nearly $300,000 in backpay and interest for seven union members who were owed wages for unpaid time spent traveling between work locations.

Three of those Bricklayers received more than $40,000 each.

BAC Local 23 vigorously pursued a grievance and unfair labor practice charges against their employer, Gabor Enterprises.

“This union fights for its members and we are always going to stand up for our members to make sure they are paid for the work they do,” said Danny Musacchio, President, BAC Local 23.

Ultimately, BAC Local 23 and Gabor agreed upon a fair resolution to compensate these workers for their unpaid wages. Through their fringe benefit funds, the workers also received pension and health contributions that were owed.

Welcome to the BAC Local 23 Weekly Update – January 6, 2025

Filing For Unemployment
Just Got Easier In Ohio

Ohio union members in good standing facing a layoff?

Filing for unemployment in Ohio just got a little easier.

For Ohio members, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS) implemented a new procedure on January 1, 2025.

If you are laid off and applying for unemployment compensation benefits, you should check the box that says you are a member of a union that operates a hiring hall.

ODJFS will verify that your union, BAC Local 23, is on their approved list – we are – and will confirm with us that you are a member in good standing. The old procedure that required you to take these extra steps yourself has been eliminated.

Until ODJFS “flips” or approves your application in their electronic system as a member in good standing of a union with a hiring hall, you must engage in two work-seeking activities in order to qualify for benefits that include, for example, (1) contacting your union and (2) updating your resume.

Yes, these two steps count as two. Click here and scroll down to see “Other activities that will meet your Weekly Work Search Requirements.”

Once ODJFS approves your application, and this is expected to take a week or two, you do not need to do anything else to “seek work.”

If you return to work, and are laid off again, you will need to follow the same procedure to apply for unemployment benefits.

ODJFS believes this new process will move quickly and make it easier for a union member in good standing to meet their requirement to seek work in order to qualify for benefits.

Here is a link to get started.

We want to hear from you and your experience with this new system by sending us your ideas to info@bac23.org.

BAC Local 23 members in other states, stay tuned. We will send current information for your state soon.
