International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Executive Board Re-elected

President Tim Driscoll, Secretary-Treasurer Jeremiah Sullivan, and Executive Vice President Keith Hocevar were re-elected for another term at the BAC 2025 Convention, running unopposed.

“The confidence that you have placed in me — and my fellow Board members – to lead our great union needs to be earned every day, and you have my pledge that I’ll do my utmost to continue to earn that trust,” Driscoll said in his acceptance remarks.

Sullivan echoed that commitment not to take the members’ trust and support for granted, laying out a charge both for the Executive Board and the union as a whole: “We must lead by example with understanding and compassion for the struggles of all working people. We must ensure our union is on the righteous side of history.”

Hocevar laughingly admitted to not having prepared remarks “because I didn’t know if it would be bad luck,” but pledged to “build the best union we could possibly build.”

You can read more about the election on the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers blog here.

Local 23 Representing at the IUBAC International Convention in Detroit!

Huge news out of Detroit! Local 23 took home a big win at the International Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union national competition in Detroit over the weekend!

Michael McKee, Local 23 member, was awarded 1st Place Brick!

“It means a great deal for me to place and see how I did amongst my peers,” said Michael McKee, Local 23 Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland apprentice, who won first prize in brick. “I love that bricklaying offers something new every day. It’s hard work, but it’s very rewarding to see a building come from nothing.”

McKee and his fellow contestants raced to build complex mockups that reflect real-world construction projects in less than 8 hours. They’re scored on criteria like layout, craftsmanship, neatness, safety, and aesthetics by a team of judges who are all industry and craft experts.

“The apprentices competing here today are the future of our industry,” said Tim Driscoll, BAC President and IMI/IMTEF Co-Chair. “We have an unparalleled training system that’s the envy of the industry, and it doesn’t exist without great labor-management cooperation.”

“I’m incredibly proud of Michael for bringing home the gold and being such a great representation of our union and the hard work and precision we bring to every job site. I’d also like to thank Brian Greynolds, our Director of Apprenticeship and Training for BAC Local 23 for helping to shape the next generation of bricklayers,” said Danny Musacchio, Local 23 President.

Local 23’s Cynthia Ross, Admin. Asst. to the President, Set to Retire After Decades of Dedicated Service

Cynthia has worked for BAC for almost 20 years. Over the years, she has worn many hats and served under different configurations of our union, different leadership, and different members, but one thing has stayed the same: her dedication to serving our membership and her pride in the job.

She has helped members with all different types of challenges and opportunities, and she looks back fondly on times where she has been able to help members get disability and retirement.

“If I could send one message to all the members and everyone I have worked with, it has truly been a pleasure to work with so many great people and I will miss you all tremendously. It’s been an honor serving the members of the Local 23 union family and that is what has kept me going through all these years – knowing that every day I get to work with such wonderful and hardworking people,” said Cynthia.

In retirement, Cynthia is looking forward to traveling, camping, exploring new hobbies like learning how to smoke a killer brisket, gardening, and enjoying time with her family, including her cat, Prince Panda!

“Cynthia served our members with passion and determination and she was always there for them. She leaves big shoes to fill and she will be missed, but never forgotten. We wish Cynthia all the best and thank her for her decades of amazing service for our union and its members. Enjoy your retirement, Cynthia!” said Danny Musacchio, President, BAC Local 23.

Record Turnout for Sixth Annual Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo

Last week from Sep. 16 – 18, the next generation of bricklayers and tile setters showed up for the Sixth Annual Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo, hosted by Local 23’s Brian Collier, Field Representative and Vice Chair.

Over 6,500 students from grades 7 – 12, attended the event where they learned the ins and outs of bricklaying and tile setting with great trainings and competitions led by Local 23 staff members and volunteers.

The students arrived at the Canfield Fairgrounds to meet with professionals in the skilled trades and learn more about apprenticeship and career opportunities available after graduation, including the opportunity to learn about the trades in a hands-on setting from some of the most knowledgeable individuals in Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

“Our Sixth Annual Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo was a great success! We are pleased to announce that we had a record turnout of over 6,500 students this year. We also doubled our first day attendance record, with 2,500 7th and 8th graders,” said Brian Collier, Field Representative and Vice Chair for BAC Local 23.

“I’d like to thank the owner of Youngstown Tile & Terrazzo, Josh Cohol, and employees Dave Ratliff and J. Walton, and Job Superintendent Todd Yallech of Lencyk Masonry and retirees Rickey Bell, Lee Kurtz and John Olson for assisting us with the hands on portion, and Lencyk Masonry and Youngstown Tile & Terrazzo for donating supplies and time. Their support helped us make this the most successful Expo yet,” Collier said.

Also in attendance was a long list of Local 23 staff who helped organize the event and participated in the hands-on portions of the day. Thank you to Tom Dieringer, Drew Fernandez, Mike Soltis, Joshua Moss, Nicole Ohmer, John Brassow and Joe Harrison for helping last week!

BAC Local 23 Endorses Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate

Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 23, representing 4500 highly skilled bricklayers, stone and marble masons, tilesetters, terrazzo and mosaic workers, and pointer/cleaners/caulkers, today endorsed Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate. With over a century of protecting the rights of workers, the BAC is the oldest continuous union in North America.

“No one has had a stronger record fighting for working people, unions and labor than Sherrod Brown. For decades, he has been a strong and consistent voice for workers in Ohio and across our country. We are proud to stand with Sherrod Brown and endorse him for the U.S. Senate. Working people, Ohio and our country need Sherrod Brown back in the U.S. Senate,” said Danny Musacchio, BAC Local 23 President.

“Sherrod’s critical vote in sponsoring and passing the Butch Lewis Act restored pensions for millions of Americans, including many members of BAC Local 23. Thanks to Sherrod Brown, many of our members have retired with the dignity and respect they earned. It’s acts of leadership and solidarity like this that makes endorsing Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate an easy choice,” Musacchio said.

“BAC Local 23 has been building our towns and cities for more than a century – their bricklayers, stone and tile workers, and masons have left their mark in every corner of Ohio and across the region. This union knows how important it is to have a voice in the Senate fighting for Ohio workers, and I’m honored to have them with me in this campaign as we work to undo the damage coming out of Washington,” said Sherrod Brown, candidate for U.S. Senate.

Three BAC Local 23 Apprentices Honored at Cleveland CEA Awards Ceremony

At this year’s Cleveland Construction Employers Association (CEA) Awards Ceremony, Apprentices from each union craft were honored with the title Apprentice of the Year in their particular trade. The BAC had three standout apprentices recognized as Apprentices of the Year in their respective crafts.

PCC (Pointer, Caulker, Cleaner) Apprentice of the Year: Walter Schrock

Brick Apprentice of the Year: Michael McKee

Tile Apprentice of the Year: Kitana Maclean

Each honoree was selected for their exceptional skill, dedication to learning, and commitment to upholding the high standards of their trade. The awards highlight not only individual achievement, but also the strength of the apprenticeship system in preparing the next generation of construction professionals.

“These apprentices represent the future of our industry,” said BAC Local 23 President Danny Musacchio. “Their hard work and leadership are setting the bar for their peers and inspiring the next wave of skilled tradespeople.”

The Cleveland CEA event brought together contractors, union leaders, and training directors to celebrate excellence across the building trades, with the apprentice awards serving as a highlight of the evening.

There were also Journeyworker level trades workers honored for their work on various projects throughout the region.

New Team Of Instructors and Increased Innovation To BAC Local 23’s Training Centers

Starting today, our new team of instructors and increased innovation are coming to BAC Local 23’s training centers. Related Instruction classes officially resume in September, and apprentices can expect to see immediate changes on the training floor. We are busy cleaning the facilities and building mock-ups for the upcoming year.

This year, we’re taking a hands-on approach similar to the setup at our National Training Center. The floor will be busy with mock-up stations designed to replicate real-world job tasks. These stations will give apprentices valuable, practical experience to prepare them for the demands of our employers and help them succeed in their careers.

Northern apprentices will also begin using ENGAGE, a system for recording On-the-Job Training (OJT) hours, streamlining the process and keeping records accurate and up-to-date.

Smaller class sizes will be a priority this school year, ensuring every apprentice gets the individual attention they need to sharpen their skills and build confidence.

It’s going to be a busy and productive year – and one that sets the stage for even greater success across all of BAC Local 23.

AFL-CIO’s “It’s Better in a Union: Fighting for Freedom, Fairness and Security” Bus Tour Stops In Cleveland

The AFL-CIO’s “It’s Better in a Union: Fighting for Freedom, Fairness and Security” bus tour made a stop in Cleveland over the weekend, and Local 23 members joined together to listen to union leaders from all across the country and all industries talk about how the current administration’s policies are harming workers.

IUBAC President Tim Driscoll attended the Cleveland event, saying, “The one big, beautiful bill is marketing BS… it gives tax breaks to the wealthiest among us at the expense of our Medicaid and health care. We’re gonna keep speaking truth to power.”

Thank you to all the Local 23 members who showed up to stand up for our rights as union workers. Solidarity forever.
