Local 23 Pre-Apprenticeship Class Taking Place In the North Shore Chapter!

Local 23 is hard at work in the North Shore Chapter training the next generation of bricklayers!

Over the course of 3 weeks, pre-apprentices will learn the basics of the trade like spreading mortar, reading a tape measure, marking blocks for cuts and laying brick and block. Most importantly, they will learn about the value of the union and why a union job can advance their career and provide stability and safety in the workplace.

“All over Local 23 there is a growing need to be able to provide a larger workforce to our contractors. The North Shore Chapter is no exception, so we are working every day to do our part and meet that demand with professional, skilled and highly trained craftworkers,” said Dave Greer, Membership Services & Field Support Specialist. “If all goes as planned, by the time this three-week course is done we’ll be able to place every single one of these pre-apprentices with contractors and get them building their career and putting money in their pockets.”

Remembering Norm King

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Norm King, founder of Norm King Construction and a respected signatory contractor. Norm passed away at 89, after an extraordinary 71 years and 8 months of membership in our union, joining at just 18 years old.

Norm started the company 45 years ago, and his family will continue his legacy at Norm King Construction.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.

Remembering Brother Jerre Riggle

We are saddened to inform our members that Jerre Riggle, the former field representative for the Youngstown/Warren area, passed away last week.

“Jerre was a good, loyal union man. He was a hard worker and when he got his marching orders – even if nobody else was doing it – Jerre did it. He followed through and led by example. The whole Local 23 family was very lucky to call him a brother and he will be missed,” said Lee Kurtz, former Local 8 President and retired member of 52 years.

Over the weekend, many of Riggle’s former union brothers and sisters attended his funeral service, paying respects to him and his family.

As a testament to his dedication to this union and all we stand for, Brother Jerre’s trowel and hammer were placed beside his ashes. Solidarity.

MegaMeeting on Saturday, April 26

Set your calendars.

We will hold our biannual MegaMeeting on Saturday, April 26 beginning at 10 a.m.

We would love to see you in person at the Plumber & Pipefitters Local at 1250 Kinnear Road in Columbus, Ohio, 43212.

We listened to you and understand it is difficult for some members to travel so, as President Danny Musacchio promised in October, we are setting up satellite sites at training centers in Amherst, Batavia and West Virginia for you to take part in the MegaMeeting.

This is your union so please plan to be active in these twice-a-year meetings. There will be no chapter meetings in April.

The MegaMeeting will include a thorough review of Local 23’s finances, and a report from every Field Rep and organizer in our four states.

JATC administrators will report as well.

“You’ll get to hear from everyone who works for you,” said President Musacchio.
