Union History: Class is in session!

BAC Local 23 Secretary-Treasurer, Noah Carmichael, has been teaching apprentices the history of our union for 10 years. He recently held a class, assigning apprentices to find union leaders from throughout history. The students did a great job finding incredible leaders like Eugene Debs, George Meany, Cesar Chavez, and James Connolly. One group even did a presentation on union organizations from around the globe. This class was connecting the dots throughout the history of the labor movement to their own union and their own work right now!

“I am not a formally trained teacher, but I came up with the union history class for our first-year apprentices and have been teaching it for 10 years. It is very important to the future of our union, and union members to understand where they came from. People bled to have union rights, and we honor those people by remembering their history and teaching our members how to fight to preserve them. The bricklayer’s union and our members are part of the entire labor movement. The goal is to have our members, even the apprentices, be a strong part of it,” said Carmichael.

Our entire region here in Local 23 is rich with union leaders, union history, and many unspoken battles that took place right underneath our feet.

ACT Ohio and BAC Local 23 Hold Training Event for School Counselors

During this two-day event, more than 100 school counselors from across Northern Ohio participated in a specialized training hosted by ACT Ohio and the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 23. The program helped counselors gain a deeper understanding of registered apprenticeship programs and how they provide students with debt-free, high-skill career pathways in the construction industry.

The event was held at the Northern Ohio Regional Training Center in Amherst, where attendees toured the state-of-the-art facility, observed live masonry and masonry restoration demonstrations, and even took part in hands-on activities alongside instructors and apprentices.

“This event gives counselors a real appreciation for the professionalism and technical expertise today’s apprentices develop,” said Kitty McConnell, a representative from ACT Ohio. “It’s about showing them that apprenticeship programs are not a second option — they’re a first-class career path for students who want to earn while they learn.”

This event also fulfills a state requirement for counselor professional development. Under Ohio Revised Code § 3319.2213, guidance counselors serving grades 7–12 must complete a four-hour training on building and construction trades apprenticeships every five years as part of their license renewal. The training—offered at no cost—must be conducted through a Joint Labor-Management Apprenticeship Training Center (JATC) and provides information on pay, benefits, and job opportunities in the skilled trades.

While this specific mandate focuses on the construction sector, Ohio law also encourages broader career exploration and workforce awareness through programs like the Career Awareness and Exploration Funds, established under House Bill 110, which help schools expand students’ understanding of diverse career pathways.

By attending the Amherst session, counselors not only met state professional development requirements but also gained firsthand insight into how BAC Local 23’s apprenticeship model blends classroom learning, on-the-job training, and competitive wages to prepare students for lifelong success.

“In many schools, students hear about college every day, but not enough about careers in the trades,” said Brian Greynolds, BAC Local 23 Training Director. “By inviting counselors here, we’re helping them see what modern apprenticeship training really looks like — and how rewarding it can be.”

The training is part of ACT Ohio’s ongoing initiative to connect educators, workforce leaders, and industry partners in strengthening Ohio’s future workforce. By equipping counselors with accurate, up-to-date information on apprenticeship programs, ACT Ohio and BAC Local 23 are ensuring that every student in Ohio learns about all paths to success — college, career, or construction.

New Signatory Contractors and Members Join BAC Local 23 in Northwest Ohio Chapter

Scott Ansell, Field Rep for the Northwest Chapter, has been hard at work to grow our union. In the last few weeks, Field Rep Ansell has worked to organize several new contractors and members to join BAC Local 23!

Firman Masonry, Premier Waterproofing, and Industrial Power Systems have all signed on to the statewide agreement, and now are part of BAC Local 23 along with all of their current craftworkers.

In addition to the new signatory contractors, Ansell has signed up 6 new individual members while working on Project Labor Agreement jobsites in Toledo.

“It’s always great to get a signed union card back because I know what that means for our new members – a voice on the job. We’re always working to grow our union because we know that our greatest strength is our power in numbers. It’s been a great couple weeks growing our union family!” said Ansell.

Thank you to Brother Ansell for his tireless work out in the field!

John R. Buchtel CLC Experiential Learning Day at the Akron Zoo Veterinary Hospital

BAC Local 23 Akron Field Representative Tom Dieringer, with cooperation from Higley Construction and Norm King Masonry, arranged for students from John R. Buchtel CLC College & Career Academy to visit the construction site of the new Akron Zoo Veterinary Hospital for an experiential learning day.

Twenty four students spent over two hours working with union bricklayers currently building the new Vet Hospital. This is an incredible opportunity to get new young people excited about a career in bricklaying and helps to show the power of the union.

Dieringer also held another experiential learning day at the Brunswick High School project last week with students from the same program.

Northern Ohio Chapters Showdown Golf Scramble – North Shore Chapter Takes The Win!

Organized by Ryan Olinger, former Northern Ohio Regional Training Center Apprentice Instructor, one hundred people, including 88 golfers, participated in the Northern Ohio Chapters Showdown Golf Scramble over the weekend. The scramble took place at the Mayfair Country Club in Uniontown, Ohio and beautiful, sunny weather made for a great day of golf! The scramble was a competition between the Northeast Chapter and the North Shore Chapter, with the North Shore Chapter ultimately taking home victory.

The scramble was used to raise money for a Tool Scholarship that will help multiple apprentices that may need a little help acquiring some of the necessary tools to work in the trade.

“It was a great day and I’d like to thank everyone who came out to golf or volunteer and help us get members of the industry together, including a huge thank you to all of the people who generously donated to make the event a big success. It’s so important that we make and maintain these relationships because we’re all in this together. This is how we continue to improve and expand the masonry industry. I’m looking forward to growing the event to include building designers next year!” said Ryan Olinger, organizer of the scramble and former Northern Ohio Regional Training Center Apprentice Instructor. Olinger now works at Tucker Supply, a sponsor of the event.

International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Executive Board Re-elected

President Tim Driscoll, Secretary-Treasurer Jeremiah Sullivan, and Executive Vice President Keith Hocevar were re-elected for another term at the BAC 2025 Convention, running unopposed.

“The confidence that you have placed in me — and my fellow Board members – to lead our great union needs to be earned every day, and you have my pledge that I’ll do my utmost to continue to earn that trust,” Driscoll said in his acceptance remarks.

Sullivan echoed that commitment not to take the members’ trust and support for granted, laying out a charge both for the Executive Board and the union as a whole: “We must lead by example with understanding and compassion for the struggles of all working people. We must ensure our union is on the righteous side of history.”

Hocevar laughingly admitted to not having prepared remarks “because I didn’t know if it would be bad luck,” but pledged to “build the best union we could possibly build.”

You can read more about the election on the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers blog here.

Local 23 Representing at the IUBAC International Convention in Detroit!

Huge news out of Detroit! Local 23 took home a big win at the International Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union national competition in Detroit over the weekend!

Michael McKee, Local 23 member, was awarded 1st Place Brick!

“It means a great deal for me to place and see how I did amongst my peers,” said Michael McKee, Local 23 Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland apprentice, who won first prize in brick. “I love that bricklaying offers something new every day. It’s hard work, but it’s very rewarding to see a building come from nothing.”

McKee and his fellow contestants raced to build complex mockups that reflect real-world construction projects in less than 8 hours. They’re scored on criteria like layout, craftsmanship, neatness, safety, and aesthetics by a team of judges who are all industry and craft experts.

“The apprentices competing here today are the future of our industry,” said Tim Driscoll, BAC President and IMI/IMTEF Co-Chair. “We have an unparalleled training system that’s the envy of the industry, and it doesn’t exist without great labor-management cooperation.”

“I’m incredibly proud of Michael for bringing home the gold and being such a great representation of our union and the hard work and precision we bring to every job site. I’d also like to thank Brian Greynolds, our Director of Apprenticeship and Training for BAC Local 23 for helping to shape the next generation of bricklayers,” said Danny Musacchio, Local 23 President.

Local 23’s Cynthia Ross, Admin. Asst. to the President, Set to Retire After Decades of Dedicated Service

Cynthia has worked for BAC for almost 20 years. Over the years, she has worn many hats and served under different configurations of our union, different leadership, and different members, but one thing has stayed the same: her dedication to serving our membership and her pride in the job.

She has helped members with all different types of challenges and opportunities, and she looks back fondly on times where she has been able to help members get disability and retirement.

“If I could send one message to all the members and everyone I have worked with, it has truly been a pleasure to work with so many great people and I will miss you all tremendously. It’s been an honor serving the members of the Local 23 union family and that is what has kept me going through all these years – knowing that every day I get to work with such wonderful and hardworking people,” said Cynthia.

In retirement, Cynthia is looking forward to traveling, camping, exploring new hobbies like learning how to smoke a killer brisket, gardening, and enjoying time with her family, including her cat, Prince Panda!

“Cynthia served our members with passion and determination and she was always there for them. She leaves big shoes to fill and she will be missed, but never forgotten. We wish Cynthia all the best and thank her for her decades of amazing service for our union and its members. Enjoy your retirement, Cynthia!” said Danny Musacchio, President, BAC Local 23.

Below are some pictures from Cynthia’s retirement party!
